Best Beginner Skis
Skiing is a popular sport or activity these days, and its popularity continues to grow until now. Today, more and more people, men and women alike, and sometimes even children, want to try their hand on skiing. It is an exciting sport, but can be quite dangerous so you need to have the proper gear and exercise caution always.
Beginners, or newbies to the skiing scene, are likely to feel intimidated when choosing their first ski board and gear. While it’s easy to say that you only need beginner skis, with such a wide array of boards to choose from different companies, it is so hard to pick just one. Although, with the help of an expert skier, he or she can easily help you pick the suitable ski for your current level.
First, know that there are many types of skis. There are five basic types of skis, each with their own attributes and specialties. These are the following:
- All-mountain skis – very common, and these can be used in almost any terrain and snow condition.
- Carving skis – as the name implies, it is suitable for carving through hard snow conditions.
- Powder skis – the exact opposite of carving skis. These are suitable when you live in areas with powdered snow conditions.
- Twin-tips - skis that are mostly used in terrain parks, but some manufacturers, such as Rossignol, have made twin-tip all-mountain skis for downhill skiers.
- Race skis – skis that are made especially for races, and are not sold on shops (usually loaned only on tournaments, etc.).
Now that you know the different types of skis, you should pick the ski that will suit your style. This will greatly narrow down the choices, so you will have an easier time picking the right one for you.
Next thing to consider is to know the attributes of the ski you want to purchase. Beginner skis’ attributes are usually well-rounded, balancing the speed and power attribute of the board. But you may also want to consider the board’s ability to make turns, its controllability, responsiveness, and other attributes. So you will still need to consult an expert with this one.
Most expert skiers will recommend skis with a waist width of 70 to 76mm. These boards, according to them, cater usually for beginners, as they are forgiving and easy to turn width. It is also stable, which makes controlling it easier than other boards.
While most beginners would likely purchase the cheapest they can get, it is not recommended. These cheap beginner skis will only last for a season or two. So if you want to ski for more than two seasons, it is recommended that you get a more expensive beginner ski, it will save you a lot of money in the long run.
